VIKING VS FARMERS

Objective:
For the "Vikings" to steal all the sheep from the farms and take back to their boat.
How it works:
Split all students into two teams.

the vikings starting placethe farmers starting place

Give out practice weapons to everyone, making sure to try to keep the teams balanced with weapon reach and skill levels (example: give low rank students staffs and high rank students swords)

Make to squares on the floor at opposite corners, one being the "Viking ship" and the other the "farm house" each has one door way in which they can enter and exit, if a person is inside of their base they are safe from harm

Make a 3rd square with a bigger "doorway" close to the farm house.

Place "sheep" inside of the 3rd square (animal pen) I use folding chairs.the sheep in their pin

How to get someone "out"

Play 1 of 2 ways.

In one way any good hit (not counting the hands) is a kill shot

The other way, is only head or body shots are kill shots, if an arm is hit they put that arm behind their back (I allow them to switch weapon to other hand). If both arms are out they can get some practice in kicking :) If a leg shot then they must fight from their knees and not stand back up (until they get killed).

the vikings and farmers face offtim ross steals a sheep keep guard with his knife

To keep every nice and "warmed up" I make them do 10 pushups when they get killed (after they return to their base or course), or if you want to be nice simply 10 jump and jacks, either way, after a few mins this game is quite a good work out, and practice on team work, and going against multi attackers. Special thanks go out to the SCA from whom I got this idea from, just adapted it a bit to class.

CLIFF TOP GROUND FIGHTING

Objective:

There is only enough room left on this small peace of earth for one person to live on so you must get your opponent off of this "cliff" or mountain top to be able to survive.

Setup:
ground fighting getting ready

Place a square workout mat on the floor something about 6' Square

How it works:

Start 2 students (or more) on opposite corners of the mat, on their knees, they can only wrestle each other to get the other one off the matt.

the ground fighting match startshalf of the students are out
ground fighting match victor

What I consider to be "off" the matt, normally if they get the lower half of the body (hips and lowers) off the matt they would had fallen off, however if a student was to get his opponent off the matt and he ended up going off with him too they would both loose.

Try this game with not allow submittions, and also with allow someone to loose by having to slap out. Personally I prefer not allowing submittions, gets them to work on movement, and balance, as well as controlling opponents body. When I do this type of game I'll have everyone do it, then the winners go against each other etc. etc., until you have one last winner left.

FULL CONTACT FOOTBALL

OBJECTIVE: One person has a "football" or something like it and has to make it past all the other students to the other side of the work out area how ever he can do it. Be it run like crazy, fight his way there,, etc... I think it works best only allowing take down with the students that are trying to stop him from making it to his goal.

DODGE STAR
dodge star - dodge ball - rubber star

OBJECTIVE:Played just like "Dodge Ball" but with rubber throwing stars

USES: RUBBER STARS / I know how to make paper once if your interested but with the time involved on making up 20 of them you may want to just buy some of these
( I use these from martialartsmart.com for about $1 and they have the weight that is need for them to fly fairly good, better than paper ones)

I pick about 1 student on each side of the mat to be the throwers, and everyone else in the middle. Last one left inside wins. Basically any hit anywhere counts. This A: Works on evasion and B: Works on throwing projectile skills

BE SAFE: These stars throw suprizingly great, but I guess they could hurt if someone got hit in the eyes, you may require that kids & newer students wear eye protection. Even thou there are thowers on both sides only allow one to throw at a time so that every has a chance to see the starts coming at them.

GANG WAR
gang war - rubber knife

OBJECTIVE: LAST ONE LEFT STANDING WINS FOR THAT TEAM

USES: RUBBER KNIVES
( I use these from martialartsmart.com for about $4 and they have the weight of real knife)

Split students into 2 groups, give out rubber knives or if you prefer weapons like the Viking game.
Start the teams at opposite corners, and let them go at it.

POT OF GOLD

OBJECTIVE: GET POT OF GOLD BACK TO YOUR STARTING POSITION
Start students at equal distance from an item on the floor.(also try more than 2 students for a bit more "action")

pot of gold start- dale and robert face offdale and robert ground fighting

WINNING:  Basically who ever can get the "pot of gold" back to his original starting position by what ever means necessary. (setup your rules example: Ground Fighting only / Kicks only / Evasion only... etc
robert escapes with the pot of gold

BODY GUARD THE PRESIDENT

OBJECTIVE:
PROTECT A PERSON AGAINST HARM WHILE ESCORTING THEM TO A SAFE HOUSE

How it works:
Split all students into two teams. One team has a non-fighter (the President)

the presidents body guards defend the presidentthe president is escorted to safety

Place the two teams at opposite corners of the floor area, decide ahead of time what will be allowed, a few examples are: Ground Fighting Only, Punching / Kicking only, Anything goes.

I usually say that if anyone one is able to either A: Make contact with the "president" then they win or B: Must be able to take the president to the ground. All of this must be done before the president can reach his safety zone, in the case of the above game it was the original starting position of the enemy. As pictured above the teams were even and everyone ended up jumping one another, once one person got free he escorted the president to the safety zone, or the president could had ran there while the fighting was going on.
